KOLKATA: His work in Silicon Valley changed the lifestyle of thousands in Kolkata. No wonder thousands of hearts in the city will weep for him when he’s no more.
The city has matched its steps with the entire world in paying tribute to legendary Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and mourning his early demise. Amidst messages like “RIP” and “We miss Steve”, the remembrance was more traditional at the Apple store at City Centre II.
The store offered a prayer service and maintained oneminute silence in Job’s memory.
“Generally our store is a place that buzzes with music and happy customers. Solemnity prevailed in the store on Friday with even phones being in silent mode,” said store manager Samir Shrestha. The store has put up a table with Jobs photo in an iPad. “People are pouring in since morning to pay their tribute. We have printed forms for them to share their feelings about the demise of Jobs. Dedicated email Ids have been created to receive tributes via mails. We have special arrangements in his memory till Sunday. We request everybody, who loved him, to come pay their tribute,” added Samir.
“He was a great inspiration for me, taught me that we can create a difference always through strong will power and technology. I hope one day I too can create something as spectacular as what he did. Good Bye Sir!” read the tribute by Rahul Kumar Mondal, an engineering student. “A great visionary RIP Mr. Jobs” was another tribute by Anshu Sinha. For Anil P Kasthar, the Apple connection is almost a decade old. “I have used Apple laptops and desktop. I always have the iPod with me. I want to buy an iPad soon,” he said.
This wasn’t all. Social networking sites were also abuzz with tributes. “There are three apples that define history and evolution — the one Eve ate, the second fell on Newton and the third was offered to the world by Steve Jobs,” Urvashi Singh quipped on
Facebook. All records were broken with 10,000 tweets per second. “Apple changed computers. iPod changed music. iPhone changed cell phones.
Steve Jobs changed the world.” tweeted a fan. “Steve Jobs taught us the ‘smart’ way to live. He was a genius,” read Rashmi Somani’s status.
